National Traffic Model™

Congestion is a problem in America's 437 urban areas and is getting worse. We cannot build enough roads to significantly reduce the $78 billion annual loss due to traffic delay. Consequently, there is great interest in managing commercial and personal travel using predictive and real-time traffic information to intelligently route, optimize departure or avoid incidents to improve mobility. To address these issues, Mygistics is building the world's largest transportation model, developing traffic flows for the entire US main roadway network. This model has a broad range of applications: from providing traffic data for urban and regional transportation models to improve the utilisation of existing and planned infrastructure; assessing environmental impacts (e.g. emission surveys or noise mapping); dynamic route guidance and calculation or realistic travel times; scenario testing of traffic management strategies; business intelligence to aid in the location of commercial properties or outdoor advertising placement. As such our model may be used wherever questions about traffic flows, traffic distribution, volumes, or traffic frequencies arise.

Questions & Answers

What data feeds into the National Traffic Model? The National Traffic Model® accepts the following data sources: household travel survey data, ITS roadway sensor data, GPS data from consumer/commercial vehicles, cellular probe data, traffic signal timings, accident/incident data and construction work zones.
How will Mygistics National Traffic Model be used? The National Traffic Model® data will be useful in the following markets: Commercial Logistics/Telematics, Commercial Scheduling/Planning, Consumer Navigation/Telematics, Personal Navigation Devices, Online Mapping and Internet Portal Providers, Traffic Planners/Managers and the Media. It is anticipated that many other markets will show interest in this data.
When will the National Traffic Model be completed? We're currently finishing our pilot model in the Chicago area for calibration and final validation. From there, we greatly accelerate model development starting with the most congested metro's on our way to a contiguous national model.
